The Menopause Supplement Debate - Chemical vs Natural?

J D Dean

Taking a menopause supplement to alleviate the symptoms of menopause for many women is simply non-debatable. Effects from hormonal imbalances cause uncomfortable discomfort in many forms from hot flashes to dry skin to calcium loss etc.

The options presented to women today in the shape of a menopause supplement to combat these symptoms are on the increase especially as many are becoming wary of treatments such as hormone replacement therapy. Natural treatments are becoming popular but if HRT does it's job of alleviating symptoms quickly why ignore it's effectiveness.

HRT

For almost instant relief, HRT compliments the loss of hormone in the same measure as it's depleted. However, the concern arises that the replenishment of estrogen and progesterone chemically may lead to other complications further "down the track."

If this is a concern you have about using hormone replacement therapy then the final call is yours about whether to proceed with this treatment. Before making any decisions though, discuss with your doctor the benefits and non benefits of heading down this track.

Using A Herbal Menopause Supplement

Soy food extracts are especially rich in plant estrogen and herbal remedies are providing women with what is considered a safer alternative. Soy based isoflavones are considered as a relief source for one of the main menopause symptoms in hot flashes.

Locating natural estrogen producing sources is the main reason herbal menopause supplements are becoming increasingly popular. Red clover, ging seng and seaweed are three naturally producing estrogen plants and form the basis of many herbal remedies. Be warned however, never take any herbal remedies without consulting your doctor particularly if you have allergies to certain plants, diabetes or high blood pressure or if you are taking medications for these conditions.

Research indicates the consumption of nuts such as almonds, peanuts and walnuts can also provide some relief from menopausal symptoms. A diet rich in calcium and minerals is extremely beneficial in both relieving symptoms and counteracting the harm that menopause does to the body.

Other Supplemental Treatment

Oral treatments in the shape of pills are another menopause supplement alternative. For example, contraceptive pills could be prescribed in an effort to regulate and slow down the menopausal symptoms.

For symptoms such as dry or itchy skin and vaginal discomfort, creams and ointments which are in the main, chemically based, could be prescribed as a short term relief method.

So if you have been thinking about a menopause supplement and are getting a little confused about which way to go, then the short but simple answer is to discuss the issue with your local physician. It will be your choice in the end; getting almost instant relief from chemically based treatments or going the longer relief route of naturally-based alternatives.
