There is a massive hormonal imbalance occurring in the body during the pre-menopausal stages. Due to the hormone problems there are massive mood swings and bouts of depression attacks at the most inopportune moments.

Emotional episodes such as becoming teary over simple things such as dropping and breaking a piece of china are not uncommon. It's hard for a woman to understand why she reacts so emotionally to something like this but it's one of the mental effects of menopause.

Depression can be a major player while a lack of a sex drive is common. The latter can also impact the woman's partner who may not understand what's going on or why it's happening. This can lead to tension within the household.
